Ficus can create fast, dense privacy in Dubai gardens, but it is vigorous. It should be used with sufficient root space, controlled irrigation and a realistic pruning plan.
1. Why ficus is popular
Ficus establishes quickly, responds to clipping and forms a dense evergreen screen. It is often selected where privacy is required within a short period.
2. Root considerations
Roots can be vigorous. Avoid planting immediately beside pools, drains, lightweight walls and restricted planters without appropriate containment and technical review.
3. Spacing
Overly tight spacing creates rapid initial cover but increases competition and maintenance. Select spacing according to plant size, variety and required screen height.
4. Irrigation
Consistent irrigation supports establishment, but permanently wet soil can cause decline. Emitters should be checked regularly along long hedge lines.
5. Pruning
Frequent light shaping is preferable to infrequent severe cutting. Maintain a slightly wider base so lower foliage continues receiving light.
6. Alternatives
Where root space is limited, slower or less vigorous screening plants may be more appropriate. Selection should be based on boundary conditions, not speed alone.
7. Design integration
A hedge should align with the overall garden architecture. Break long green walls with feature planting or layered foreground planting where space allows.
Green Zen recommendation
Evaluate each decision in the context of the whole landscape: climate exposure, soil, irrigation, access, maintenance, architecture and intended use. Green Zen Landscapes can assess the site, develop the design and coordinate implementation across Dubai and selected UAE locations.
