Frangipani is valued for its sculptural branching and fragrant flowers. In Dubai it performs best in sunny, sheltered positions with excellent drainage and careful winter irrigation.
1. Landscape character
Frangipani suits tropical, resort-style and contemporary courtyards. Its branching silhouette remains visually strong even when leaves are reduced in winter.
2. Sun and shelter
Provide strong sunlight for flowering. Sheltered locations reduce wind damage and help protect the plant during cooler winter nights.
3. Drainage
Frangipani is vulnerable to root problems in wet soil. Use free-draining planting media and ensure irrigation does not collect around the trunk.
4. Seasonal behaviour
Leaf drop or reduced foliage during cooler months is normal. This should be explained to clients so natural dormancy is not mistaken for failure.
5. Irrigation
Water more consistently during active growth and reduce frequency during winter dormancy. Avoid a fixed year-round schedule.
6. Pruning
Prune selectively to manage shape and remove damaged branches. Heavy repeated cutting can reduce flowering and distort the natural form.
7. Companion planting
Combine frangipani with palms, heliconia, ornamental grasses and lush groundcovers where irrigation zones can be managed appropriately.
Green Zen recommendation
Evaluate each decision in the context of the whole landscape: climate exposure, soil, irrigation, access, maintenance, architecture and intended use. Green Zen Landscapes can assess the site, develop the design and coordinate implementation across Dubai and selected UAE locations.
