Rosemary fits Mediterranean and low-water garden styles, but it performs best when heat tolerance is supported by excellent drainage and careful irrigation rather than constant moisture.
1. Best design uses
Rosemary can edge paths, soften stone, spill from raised planters or form low aromatic masses beneath olive trees.
2. Sun requirements
Provide full sun. Shaded rosemary becomes open, weak and more prone to decline.
3. Drainage
The plant dislikes waterlogged roots. Sandy, free-draining soil and raised planting positions often improve performance.
4. Irrigation
Allow the soil to drain between watering cycles. Separate rosemary from plants that require consistently wet soil.
5. Pruning
Light, regular trimming maintains density. Avoid cutting deeply into old bare wood unless regeneration potential is clear.
6. Summer management
Monitor plants near dark paving and reflective walls, where root-zone and leaf temperatures can become extreme.
7. Companion plants
Olive, lavender-like species, ornamental grasses, bougainvillea and gravel create a coherent Mediterranean palette.
Green Zen recommendation
Evaluate each decision in the context of the whole landscape: climate exposure, soil, irrigation, access, maintenance, architecture and intended use. Green Zen Landscapes can assess the site, develop the design and coordinate implementation across Dubai and selected UAE locations.
