Travertine and outdoor porcelain are both common pool-deck choices in Dubai. Selection should be based on tested slip performance, surface temperature, drainage, maintenance and the desired architectural style.
1. Visual character
Travertine offers natural tonal variation and a resort-like finish. Porcelain can replicate stone while providing more uniform dimensions and colour.
2. Heat
Pale travertine and pale porcelain can both perform well. Dark, dense surfaces typically feel hotter in direct sun.
3. Slip resistance
Use finishes specifically rated for wet outdoor areas. Polished or smooth products should not be assumed safe.
4. Water absorption
Porcelain is generally less porous. Travertine has natural pores and may require filling, sealing and periodic maintenance.
5. Edge details
Pool coping, drainage channels and transitions should be resolved as part of the material decision, not added later.
6. Repairs
Travertine can be repaired with natural variation, while porcelain requires matching spare tiles from the same batch.
7. Decision rule
Use travertine for natural warmth and texture; use porcelain where consistency and lower porosity are higher priorities.
Green Zen recommendation
Evaluate each decision in the context of the whole landscape: climate exposure, soil, irrigation, access, maintenance, architecture and intended use. Green Zen Landscapes can assess the site, develop the design and coordinate implementation across Dubai and selected UAE locations.
